Alex Burghart is Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Since 2017 he has been the Member of Parliament for Brentwood and Ongar in Essex. Prior to entering politics Alex studied history at Christ Church, Oxford, and received a doctorate from King’s College London where he lectured and taught. He occasionally writes about medieval history for The Spectator and has edited the works of the late Prof James Campbell soon to be published as Origins of the English State.
